Hole in the rock (Piercy Island - Cape Brett) |
Sadly it was time to leave, we did a last minute shop for a few groceries at the 4 Square on the waterfront and headed back to the boat, cleaned up, and pulled up the anchor for the last time outside Russell. We motored out past Okahu Island and sadly the wind was next to nothing so we had to keep on motoring. We were going to cut through the gap between Cape Brett and Piercy Island but since I had never seen the famous hole in the rock we went right around the top of the island and even managed to get full sails out for a short time which was nice. But as usual the wind died and we were back on with the motor, and while we are making a racket it was time to fire up the dive compressor and top off the tanks while we can.

Before long we found ourselves in Bland Bay and dropped the hook in only 3m of water on what seemed pretty sketchy anchorage so we lifted anchor, motored to the other side of the bay before realising the swell there was not great we ended up going back to our original spot which turned out to be fine and we never moved at all.
The following morning we picked up anchor and looked at the large reef on the way out trying to decide if we wanted to gear up and have a quick dip but decided against it as we had a fair bit of ground to cover. We managed to get in a lot of sailing today which was a great change. There was a great sight to see as we sailed past a man on a jetski with more rods in the water than we have onboard, and not long after seeing him we heard our reel start buzzing a mile and hour, I jumped up to get a glimpse of a large marlin leap out the water and then our line suddenly snapped. Must have been a decent size to snap 100lb line like a twig, and that was my favourite lure!

The heads of Tutukaka Harbour, you can just make out the lighthouse on the headland |
After all the excitement we were keeping an eye out for the mooring ball for the Tui wreck but it was nowhere to be seen (turns out that the ball had been ripped off in bad weather and hadn't been replaced yet), so we just kept on going and motored into Tutukaka harbour and made a text book docking into our berth. Time to go see the marina manager and sort out payment, laundry tokens and shower tokens...looking forward to a good hot shower!
