You might ask who we are and what we are on about you might even have been brave enough to ask what a Milk Run is. If you had flash backs to yourself as a youngin delivering milk you might be right but this time you’re not. Well the milk run or how it’s more commonly known as “The Coconut Milk Run” is a journey that normally starts in Mexico and ends in Australia. However we will be starting in the Bahamas and finishing in good old New Zealand.
So I suppose we should tell you a little bit more about ourselves. We are a small group of friends, (Owen, Emma and Roe) that had the bright idea of spending six months on a small boat splashing about vast empty oceans. We will be documenting our process from start to finish through this blog and the occasional vlog.
So who are we?
Owen Crump
Plumber extraordinaire by day and for the lack of a better candidate he is our captain. He achieved this position mostly due to the fact he can tell the front of the boat from the back bit. He also seems to know how the fabric thingy works. But on a more serious note he is the reason for the trip. Owen will be purchasing Dulcinea in the Bahamas and bringing it home. Doing a trip like this has been a dream of his since he was a youngin.
Emma Leddie
Well they always say don’t sleep with a drip get a plumber. Well Emma did just this and bagged herself an Owen and thus becoming the official Captains Wench. Emma works for Roes production company full time so has great plans for filming the trip.
Roe van der Merwe
Roe is what I would suppose would classify as the first mate, Roe says he is their only mate. Under the illusion that this trip will take place on a 5 star cruise liner with boys in hot pants he accepted the challenge. Because how hard could it really be just sitting by the pool sunbathing and drinking those drinks with little umbrellas in them. When Roe heard that Emma was abandoning him for 6 months to sit in the office on his own, he hung a back in 6 months sign on the door and locked up and decided to come along too!
What are we sailing?
The boat in question is Dulcinea, a 1982 44’ Kalik sloop designed by Gary Mull and built in Belgium by Jachtwerf Vennekens boatyard. In preparation for her 10,000nm (18,000km) journey she has been equipped with state of the art safety equipment, solar and wind power generation, reverse osmosis watermaker and enough food to last an average family months. All crew aboard will have private cabins, when we are not outside enjoying the sights there is a widescreen television to watch, laptops for all crew and uninterrupted satellite radio. We keep in contact with the outside world via VHF radio, SSB radio or satellite telephone so nothing will be missed.
