Waitangi Weekend Day 2 - Putanui Point to Ketu Bay
Sleep in! finally! I think we woke around 9:30am when the sun shining through the front hatch was too much for the body to ignore. After a cooked breakfast and a slow start to the morning we dropped the mooring ball, motored around Putanui Point and put full sails up and cruised for all of 2 mins before the wind did its usual trick and came around right onto the nose. After motoring for a while we managed to get sails out again and sail for a while before the wind died to near nothing, at which point Roe figured it was good kite flying weather and proceeded to fly the pig kite off the bow before breaking that, then launching the unicorn flag before crash landing that into the drink. After a kite overboard drill we were back on track, sadly the kite was lost in action and received a not so dignified funeral and was tossed straight in the bin. We were being followed by a small trailer sailer and as I was not going to be beaten by this we threw some sails back up and rode the ever increasing wind, a couple of time the gusts of at least 35kn came from nowhere and we rounded up after being over canvassed (nothing like the small boat which was getting laid pretty flat over and over). Once we rounded Tawero Point we had the wind right up the date and it was blowing a constant 30+kn now, and with full genoa up we were smoking along at 7-8kn and after a decision to head further out of the sounds as opposed to Tennyson Inlet area. It was getting into the afternoon now and we skipped Richmond Bay and poked our head into Ketu looking for a club mooring but things didn't look hopeful with 3 moorings we could see taken but as we rounded the corner at the head of the bay we saw a free one, and what a spectacular spot it was. The wind had died off (or was very sheltered in there) so we pulled the mooring and had a spot of late lunch. After food we jumped in the dinghy and headed for shore for a look around, unfortunately not a lot too see other than a mussel buoy, a stingray cruising the shallows and a heap of jellyfish washed up on the shore. After getting back to the boat, some drinking, food, drinking, board games and drinking it was pretty much bed time and we were all out pretty quick after a long day in the sun and fresh air.
